"You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others."
Matthew 5:14–16
As a Voluntary Aided Church of England primary school, Malvern Wells CE Primary School is committed to providing a curriculum that nurtures the whole child, enabling each student to become the brightest version of themselves. Rooted in our core values of commitment, compassion, community, and courage, our educational approach is designed to support the academic, social, and spiritual growth of every learner.
At Malvern Wells CE Primary School, we believe every child is uniquely created, deeply loved by God and full of limitless potential. Our curriculum exists to nurture that potential, enabling every child to become the brightest version of themselves academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. We believe education changes lives, and every child, regardless of background, starting point or additional need, deserves an exceptional education that equips them to flourish now and in the future.
Rooted in our Christian vision, Let Your Light Shine, our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding and develop compassionate, confident young people who are ready to make a positive difference in the world. We want every child to leave Malvern Wells with the knowledge, skills, character and values they need to thrive in secondary education and beyond.
An ambitious curriculum for every child
Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully designed to ensure every pupil secures the knowledge and understanding they need to succeed. We believe that powerful knowledge (composite knowledge) opens doors, broadens horizons and enables children to understand both the world around them and their place within it.
Each subject identifies the essential substantive knowledge children need to know and remember alongside the disciplinary knowledge that enables them to think, enquire and communicate as historians, scientists, geographers, artists, designers, musicians, mathematicians and readers. This knowledge has been carefully sequenced so that new learning builds deliberately on prior understanding, allowing children to make meaningful connections and develop increasingly secure understanding over time.
Whilst purposeful links are made across the curriculum where they strengthen learning, every subject retains its own unique integrity, vocabulary and ways of thinking. This ensures pupils develop genuine expertise rather than disconnected topic knowledge.
Learning that lasts
We know that children learn best when knowledge is carefully introduced, revisited and applied over time. Our curriculum has therefore been deliberately planned to help children remember more and understand more.
Drawing upon the strongest available evidence about how children learn, teachers use explicit instruction to introduce new concepts before providing opportunities for guided practice, independent application and deeper thinking. Retrieval practice, spaced learning, carefully sequenced lessons and responsive assessment strengthen children's understanding and support knowledge becoming embedded in long-term memory.
Learning is not measured simply by what children can recall today, but by what they continue to know, understand and apply over time.
Excellence through evidence-informed teaching
Excellent teaching sits at the heart of our curriculum.
Our teachers have high expectations for every pupil and are committed to ensuring every lesson is purposeful, inclusive and intellectually ambitious. Through expert explanation, skilful questioning, responsive assessment and carefully planned practice, children develop confidence, independence and resilience as learners.
We believe that challenge should never be reserved for a few. Every child deserves access to ambitious learning, with teaching carefully adapted to ensure all pupils can succeed without lowering expectations.
Inclusion at the heart of our curriculum
Inclusion is not something we add to our curriculum; it is fundamental to its design.
Every child deserves to belong, participate and flourish. We recognise that children learn in different ways and that some require carefully planned adaptations, additional support or alternative approaches in order to achieve success. Through responsive teaching, thoughtful adaptation and strong relationships, pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers whilst receiving the support they need to flourish.
We strive to remove barriers to learning, never ambition.
Rooted in our community, preparing children for the world
Nestled beneath the Malvern Hills, our local environment is an extension of our classroom. Children develop a deep appreciation of the history, geography, culture and natural beauty of the place they call home whilst also developing an understanding of the diverse communities, cultures and ideas that shape modern Britain and the wider world.
Through rich literature, educational visits, outdoor learning, music, art, sport, visitors and meaningful community partnerships, children build the cultural knowledge and experiences that broaden horizons, inspire aspiration and deepen their understanding of the world.
As a Church of England school, Christian values and spirituality are woven throughout school life. Children are encouraged to ask big questions, reflect deeply, show compassion, serve others and develop respect for people of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. We seek to nurture courageous advocates who understand that they can use their gifts to make a positive difference to others.
Developing the whole child
Education is about far more than academic achievement.
Alongside acquiring knowledge and skills, our curriculum develops character, resilience, kindness, curiosity and independence. Children learn to collaborate, persevere through challenge, think critically, communicate effectively and approach new experiences with confidence. They understand that mistakes are part of learning and that success is achieved through effort, reflection and determination.
By the time children leave Malvern Wells, they will have developed secure knowledge across a broad and balanced curriculum, confidence in their own abilities and a love of learning that will continue to grow throughout their lives.
Above all, we want every child to leave our school ready to let their light shine—equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and compassion to flourish in secondary school, serve their community and make a positive contribution to the world God has created.
