We believe that it is important to develop the personal qualities and values of individuals in order to
equip them to meet the wider demands of adult life maturely and with consideration. Through our work,
we encourage pupils to be aware of health issues that affect both themselves and others, to develop a
positive self image coupled with confidence and esteem and to help them to explore their own strength
and limitations. The children are also given opportunities to explore feelings, friendships and
relationships.
The Governors have agreed that sex education should form part of the school curriculum, to be delivered by members of staff and our school nurse to all students in Year 6 and, in part, to Year 5. Sex education is presented in the context of family life, of loving relationships and of respect for others. It is carried out with sensitivity and gives children an elementary understanding of the working of their bodies, including human reproduction, and of the emotional changes that will accompany their physical development.
The parents of all children involved are invited to attend a meeting with the class teacher and school nurse to view videos which will be shown to the children, and to discuss the programme before it is introduced. Parents have a right to withdraw their children from this subject at any point, should they so wish.
