History

We believe that the learning of history can be exciting and multi-sensory: using a wealth of practical experiences; examining hand-on artefacts; visiting sites of historical interest; taking part in historical simulations such as a ‘Victorian Schoolday’ or ‘Roman Banquet’. In this way, the children can experience a flavour of the past by dressing up in costume, smelling and tasting food inspired by the historical period, and trying their hand at relevant activities such as writing on wax tablets.

Through the media of discussion and role play, the children can explore issues and emotions, and begin to empathise with people of the past. We relate history to the local environment as much as possible, so that it is afforded added meaning and significance for the children: local Victorian buildings; a visit to the Malvern museum; walks on the hills. We hope that through our teaching, we will generate an interest in history in the children that will be a source of pleasure and excitement throughout their lives
