Art and Design

Art is an important component of our cross-curricular work, as it can provide an exciting introduction to topics, and enriches many subjects. Art within the school is closely linked with dance, music and drama. Children are creative by nature and, consequently, we strive to offer the opportunity and guidance to nurture and develop this valuable ability.

The children are introduced to a wide range of materials, including paint, charcoal, scraperboard, fabrics, clay and papier-mâché , and are taught several techniques such as weaving, block printing, and screen printing. Gradually we develop a child’s awareness of the fundamental elements of art: line, tone, pattern, texture, colour, shape, form and space. This is accompanied, and enhanced, by examination, and subsequent discussion, of the work of famous artists and designers.
